Terminal-Based Agents
These tools live in your terminal and work directly with your codebase through the command line. They are the power tools of AI coding.
Claude Code
The best AI coding tool available, full stop. Claude Code operates in your terminal with full access to your filesystem, Git, and shell. It reads entire codebases, makes multi-file edits, runs tests, and commits with sensible messages. The agentic loop -- where it plans, executes, verifies, and iterates -- is where the real power lives. If you write code professionally, this is the tool that gives you the biggest productivity multiplier.
Aider
The open-source terminal assistant that proved the concept before anyone else. Aider works with your local Git repo, supports Claude, GPT-4, and local models, and has excellent multi-file editing. Its benchmark suite has become the industry standard for evaluating AI coding performance. Where Claude Code is opinionated, Aider is flexible -- you pick the model, you pick the workflow. Great for developers who want control over their AI stack.
Open Interpreter
The Swiss Army knife. Open Interpreter runs code locally in Python, JavaScript, or shell to accomplish arbitrary tasks. It is less focused on code editing specifically and more on general-purpose automation -- process data, manage files, interact with APIs. Think of it as an AI assistant that happens to be able to code, rather than a coding assistant specifically.

These plug into your editor and enhance your existing workflow without requiring you to leave.
Cursor
The IDE that made AI-native editing mainstream. Cursor forked VS Code and built AI into every interaction -- tab completion, inline edits, multi-file changes from chat, and codebase-aware context. The Composer feature for multi-file edits is genuinely impressive. If you want AI coding without leaving a graphical editor, Cursor is the most polished option.
GitHub Copilot
The incumbent. Copilot's tab completion is still fast and reliable, and the chat features have improved significantly. It has the advantage of deep GitHub integration -- pull request summaries, code review suggestions, and Copilot Workspace for planning. The best choice if your team is already invested in the GitHub ecosystem and needs something that works with minimal setup.
Continue
The open-source alternative that connects any LLM to VS Code or JetBrains. Continue gives you tab autocomplete, inline editing, and chat with full codebase context -- but you choose the model. Want to use Claude for complex tasks and a local model for autocomplete? Continue makes that easy. The most configurable option for developers who care about model choice and privacy.
Cody
Sourcegraph's AI assistant with a unique advantage: it understands your entire codebase through Sourcegraph's code intelligence. Context retrieval is where Cody shines -- it pulls in relevant code from across your organization, not just the open file. Best for large monorepos and enterprise codebases where context is king.
Zed
Not primarily an AI tool, but worth mentioning because Zed's built-in AI assistance is surprisingly capable, and the editor itself is blazing fast. Written in Rust with GPU-accelerated rendering, Zed makes VS Code feel sluggish. The AI features are still catching up to Cursor, but if editor performance matters to you, keep an eye on Zed.
Tabnine
The privacy-focused option. Tabnine can run entirely on-premise with local models, making it the go-to for enterprises with strict data policies. The completions are good, not exceptional. You use Tabnine when the answer to "can we send code to an external API?" is no.
Codeium
Free tier that is generous enough for individual developers. Codeium's autocomplete is fast and handles boilerplate well. It is not going to plan a complex refactor for you, but for day-to-day coding assistance at zero cost, it holds up. Supports a wide range of editors and languages.
Autonomous Agents
These tools can work independently on larger tasks with minimal supervision.
OpenHands
Formerly OpenDevin, OpenHands is the most capable open-source autonomous coding agent. It operates in a sandboxed environment, can write code, run commands, and browse the web. Supports multiple LLM backends. The right tool when you want to hand off a well-scoped task and come back to a working implementation.
The bottom line: Use Claude Code or Aider for serious development work. Add Cursor or Continue if you prefer staying in an IDE. Layer in GitHub Copilot for team workflows. Everything else is situational.
